On his first day at work Obama has kept his promise to close GITMO. While it will take some time because of moving the detainees, the fact that our screams have not fallen on deaf ears is a milestone.
President Obama sent White House Counsel Greg Craig went to Capitol Hill to brief Congress on three Executive Orders that Obama will sign on Thursday.
According to a former Hill aide, the orders will:
- close the detainee camp at Guantanamo Bay within a year and establish a process by which the U.S. government figures out what to do with the remaining detainees;
- establish new rules on interrogation methods moving forward;
- establish new guidelines for the treatment of detainees moving forward.
